The Pineapple Story

Beginning in Europe in the late-17th century, and extending into America during the 18th century, the pineapple became a symbol of hospitality and friendship. When New England sea captains returned from their long voyages to the South Seas, they would spear a precious pineapple on their iron gates announcing to friends and neighbors that the Captain was home and all were welcome.

The pineapple was regularly cultivated, spreading to the colonies during the early 1700s. Its difficulty in growing, however, kept it an exotic delicacy. To present and to share the prosperity of the fruit was a way to honor one’s guests.
