Why do I need a crown?

There are a few reasons why you may need a dental crown. This procedure can protect a weak tooth from fracturing or decaying, support a tooth that has a large filling where there isn't enough natural tooth structure, or cover a dental implant.

A crown is a cover your dentist can put over your tooth. It can restore a damaged or missing tooth to its normal shape, size, and function. Crowns can be placed over your molar or in the front of your teeth that are designed to match the rest of your teeth.

Crowns can be made from metal alloys, ceramics, or porcelain. We can determine if you're due for this procedure based on the location and function of your tooth, the position of the gum tissue, the amount of natural tooth that is visible, and the color of the teeth around the damaged tooth.
