Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Are you currently feeling pain from your back teeth? In some cases, wisdom teeth are impacted and need to be removed because they don't have enough space to develop from the gums. They need to be removed to avoid damaging the surrounding teeth, allowing the rest of the teeth to properly grow and avoiding the nearby teeth to shift.

Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 16 to 25. They are your third molars located in the back of your mouth and are usually the last to develop.

Some symptoms you should look out for are:

• Jaw pain
• Swelling around the gums
• Discharge if the infection is present
• Wisdom tooth visible/poking out

These may be more difficult to remove than other teeth because they do not grow like the rest. If they are impacted, they will be at an angled position and will need to be extracted. They usually have irregularly shaped roots, especially in the lower jaw, because it is relative to the nerve. Depending on the complexity of the extraction, there are different anesthetic options that can be utilized during the procedure.
